How Long Does It Take to Memorize the Quran?

Most full-time Hifz students complete memorization of the entire Quran in 2–4 years, with consistent daily practice and a dedicated Hifz-focused class schedule. Part-time students learning alongside school typically take longer — often 4–7 years — and that's completely normal.

Why there's no single answer

Memorization speed depends on three things far more than on which academy or teacher you choose: the student's age and existing Arabic reading fluency, how many classes per week they attend, and — the biggest factor by far — how consistently they revise at home between classes. A student who reviews daily for 15 minutes will out-pace a student who only reviews during class, even if the second student has more class time.

A realistic timeline by class frequency

For a child who already reads Arabic confidently (has completed Noorani Qaida):

• 1 class/week, light home revision: memorization becomes very slow and inconsistent — this pace works better for Tajweed refinement than full Hifz.
• 4–5 classes/week (30-min), daily home revision: roughly 3–5 years for the full Quran, depending on the child's age and retention.
• Daily 1-hour classes, structured revision cycle: the traditional full-time Hifz pace — often 2–3 years for a dedicated student.

What actually speeds things up

Two things matter more than class frequency alone: a fixed daily revision routine at home (even 10 minutes, every single day, beats an hour once a week), and a teacher who tracks progress juz-by-juz rather than moving on before a portion is solid. Rushing ahead before memorization is secure is the single most common reason students stall or lose what they've memorized.

Starting Qaida and Tajweed first

Before Hifz begins, most students benefit from finishing Noorani Qaida and building solid Tajweed — reading fluently and correctly first makes memorization dramatically faster later, since the student isn't simultaneously learning to read and memorize.
